Modern electronics are made to complete an astounding number of tasks in a small amount of time. It is no wonder that high levels of heat can build up during operation. Being able to safely dissipate heat away from sensitive parts is absolutely critical to making sure that components are not damaged or irreparably harmed.
A prime example of this can be seen in vacuum tube-based guitar amplification, an application about as far away from ‘modern’ electronics as one might imagine. Amplifiers using tubes create a lot of heat. As such, venting is incorporated into their construction. However, stages musicians employ fans to aid in heat dissipation so as to keep amplifiers working.
This is the basic premise for a fan assembly is and does. But there is more to know about fan assemblies than just what they do. Knowing HOW fan assemblies work & WHY they do certain things may be more important so as to fine tune their design and implementation. A motor runs the fan in the assembly, but where will the power for the motor be derived? The source of input power, as well as the voltage, need to be accurately specified ahead of time based on the application.
The Numbers
Airflow for a fan assembly is looked at in terms of cubic feet per meter (CFM). Two things need to be accounted for: 1) the airflow against static pressure; and 2) how airflow changes with respect to backpressure during operation.
Critical to finding the proper fan assembly also involves knowing the application for which it will be used, as well as consideration of the voltage source (AC versus DC).
It is also important to note what size fan assembly is required for the application. The dimensions within which the assembly is to work will be imperative when trying to find an ideal solution. Keep in mind that size of the fan is not necessarily indicative of the amount of airflow to be created.
Customization When Applicable
There are times when unique circumstances present equally unique sets of complications. Customization in fan assemblies is always a viable option, at least when the manufacturer has the proper credentials. Designations such as ISO9001: 2015 certification, UL registry, and ITAR compliance certainly set a manufacturer apart. It is also important that a prospective manufacturing partner maintain adherence to industry standards & certifications domestically and (if applicable) internationally.
The Deciding Factor

Not all fan assemblies are created equal. While the parts and basic construction are similar, there are distinct differences in their design that make them right for a particular application. These minute details are why it is important to work with the right manufacturing & supplying partner. Competition in fan assemblies & other electronics component manufacturing has been on the rise for decades. With the influx of lower-quality, bargain-basement priced goods flooding the market at both the consumer & commercial/industrial level, it can be tempting to go the cheapest route.
